John has spent thirty years on the operating, strategic and policy sides of the energy transition. At Shell he was VP Group Carbon, architect of the company's net zero strategy and the first to agree joint climate goals with the Climate Action 100+ investor group. At ADNOC he was the first Group Climate Change Officer of a national oil company, delivering $15 billion of climate investment and helping position Abu Dhabi for COP28. He was founding Chairman of OGCI Climate Investments, a billion-dollar fund backed by twelve of the world's largest oil and gas companies.
Earlier he ran a 100,000 barrel-a-day oil and gas operation in Egypt, led Shell's gas technology R&D in Amsterdam, and originated the CCUS hub concepts that became Net Zero Teesside and Northern Lights. He is Chair Emeritus of International Energy Week, current Vice Chair of POWERful Women and Honorary Chair at the London College of Energy Economics.
Seven board appointments since 2010, spanning a joint-venture LLP, a public-private partnership, a government-backed research body, a private company and a Shell subsidiary in Canada, with Audit Committee membership at two. Available for non-executive and chair roles where a board needs judgement on energy.
